Xero E-Invoicing Norway FAQs

1. Can Xero support Norwegian e-invoicing requirements?

Xero can remain your accounting and invoicing software, but Norwegian e-invoicing needs structured EHF invoice generation, validation and Peppol connectivity. Advintek connects your existing Xero invoice data to Peppol-based exchange without requiring you to replace your cloud accounting platform. Native e-invoicing features in Xero can vary by region, so confirm what is currently available for your account.

No. A PDF is a document people read, while a Norwegian e-invoice is structured, machine-readable data in EHF format. Public bodies generally require the structured version, so a Xero PDF alone is usually not enough for them.

Invoice data is securely pulled from Xero through API integration or batch sync, checked against the required fields, converted into EHF-based structured data, and sent through Peppol. Delivery responses are then tracked, and records are stored.

4. Will my team need to change how they invoice in Xero?

No. Your team keeps creating invoices in Xero as usual while the e-invoicing steps run in the background, with no new system to manage day to day.

EHF is Norway’s structured electronic format for invoices and credit notes, built on Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 and the European EN 16931 standard. Systems can read it automatically, which is why public bodies and many businesses prefer it to PDF invoices.

Peppol is an international network and set of standards for exchanging structured business documents. Norwegian EHF invoices travel over Peppol. Advintek connects your Xero invoice data to this network where the recipient supports it.

7. Do I need my own Peppol access point?

No separate access point is normally needed, because Advintek handles the Peppol connectivity for you. Your setup details are confirmed during onboarding.

8. Who needs to send e-invoices in Norway?

Electronic invoicing is mainly required for suppliers to Norwegian public bodies. Many private companies also adopt it voluntarily for efficiency or because customers ask for it. Check the requirements of your specific customers.

Not necessarily. The obligation mainly concerns invoices to Norwegian public bodies, while other customers may accept PDFs or prefer e-invoices. Confirm which of your customers need structured invoices.

Usually yes. Foreign suppliers invoicing Norwegian customers can generally reach them through Peppol, without a local Norwegian entity. Requirements depend on the customer, so confirm with each contracting authority.

11. Is this suitable for services, retail, construction and professional firms?

Yes. Advintek supports Xero users across industries without changing how they operate.

Invoice information is securely pulled from Xero through API integration or batch sync, without interrupting existing finance workflows. The exact method is confirmed with you during setup.

Make sure customer records hold full legal names, addresses and Norwegian organisation numbers, and that invoices have clear tax rates, item descriptions, payment terms and bank details. Complete data means fewer validation issues.

14. What information must a Norwegian e-invoice contain?

Typically: seller and buyer details, organisation numbers, VAT registration and tax breakdown, invoice number and dates, line items, totals, currency, payment terms and bank details, and any buyer reference the recipient requires.

It is the unique 9-digit identifier for Norwegian entities in the Brønnøysund Register Centre. It is commonly used to identify the buyer or seller and to address the invoice on Peppol.

ELMA is Norway’s address register for electronic documents, maintained by the Norwegian Digitalisation Agency (Digdir). It shows which organisations can receive EHF documents and through which access point.

17. How is Norwegian VAT (MVA) handled?

VAT details are included as structured fields: tax categories, rates, taxable amounts and totals. Advintek validates these before transmission. Confirm current Norwegian VAT rates and rules with the tax authority or your accountant.

Yes. Repeating invoices created in Xero can pass through the same automated validation, structuring and delivery workflow, so recurring billing does not add manual work.

Credit notes can follow the same validation and Peppol delivery process as invoices, and are linked to the original invoice where relevant. Please confirm the details for your Xero setup during onboarding.

20. Can I invoice in Norwegian krone and other currencies?

Currency information is included in the structured invoice and checked during validation. Please confirm with Advintek which currency setups are supported for your Xero organisation.

Advintek tracks submission status and delivery responses, so you can follow each invoice from validation through to delivery without chasing recipients.

This can be identified before sending. Depending on the customer, you may need another delivery method or to ask them to register with a Peppol access point.

23. What happens if a Xero invoice fails validation?

The issue is flagged before transmission, with the reason shown. You can correct the data in Xero and resubmit, so errors are fixed before they reach the recipient.

Yes. A unified view gives real-time status visibility and flexible reporting, including across multiple entities.

25. Is my Xero invoice data secure?

Advintek uses encrypted communication, controlled permissions and ISO 27001-certified practices to protect confidential invoice information.

Invoice records are kept in structured digital archives that support audits and reporting. Norwegian bookkeeping rules generally require records to be kept for several years, so check the current retention period with your accountant.

27. How can Xero users reduce the risk of rejected invoices?

Keep customer data complete and accurate, use automated validation before sending, and fix flagged issues promptly. Advintek checks required fields and formats on every invoice.

It depends on your Xero setup, invoice data, customer base and testing needs. Advintek can give an estimate after an initial review.

29. Can I test before going live?

Yes. A testing phase checks your data, formats and connectivity before live invoices are sent.
